Casa da Guia

A Meal With a View at Casa da Guia

The coastal town of Cascais has drawn in tourists from far and wide for decades. And with its mild climate and beautiful views of the Atlantic ocean, it’s no wonder that it has become a hub for British and American expats. But just a little ways off the beaten track, you’ll find an unexpected spot for a meal with a view. It’s called Casa da Guia.

Visitors to Guincho beach will usually drive along the coast from Cascais and go right past the partially-hidden Casa da Guia without realizing. But if you pay attention, about 2 km from Cascais center, you should be able to make out an entrance to the parking lot (which is unpaved but your best bet for parking). Because of its close proximity to the town, you can also walk or bike there. Once you head towards the yellow house – the actual Casa da Guia – you’ll find lots of little stands: cafés, jewelry stands, souvenirs, and others – each with its own unique style. You’ll even see a traditional Portuguese quiosque. To your right, is the beautiful Atlantic Ocean.

Along this coastal side, you’ll come across a selection of restaurants. For me, Casa da Guia’s biggest appeal is the opportunity to dine al fresco at one of these restaurants: they range from traditional Portuguese food, to hot dogs and burgers. Make sure to snag a table right along the edge for unobstructed views to the waves hitting the cliffs below. You’ll have andorinhas (swallows) and sea gulls to keep you company. If it’s a sunny day, don’t forget to bring your sunblock, sunglasses, and a hat. The breeze along the coast is notoriously deceptive: you won’t realize you’re getting burned until you’re already turning red!

After your meal, you can wander towards the beautiful main house, which is built in typical Portuguese style and painted in a charming yellow color. Much to my liking, it features some ornate azulejos from the Alentejo. Inside, you’ll find an array of little boutique shops, including a hair dresser (convenient before a night out at the Casino Estoril or a date night in the Cascais area), clothing stores, a high-end soap shop, home decor shop, and antiques.

If you find yourself in Cascais with a few hours to spend, head over to Casa da Guia for a meal with a view… and bring your reusable bags for a little shopping too!
