Portuguese Chocolate Competition!

It’s time for a competition! And a tasty one at that! As a Portuguese person living in the US, I’m acutely aware of how different the chocolate here tastes… maybe it’s my European taste buds, but I much prefer European chocolate. Belgium and Switzerland, along with Germany and the UK, are the kings of chocolate… but did you know that Portugal also produces delicious chocolate?

Some of the most famous brands are Imperial, Regina (acquired by Imperial 17 years ago), Arcádia and Avianense. New kid on the block, Equador, has been extremely well-received. Portuguese brands tend to make more specialty chocolates, usually in vintage styles, which are extremely well-received by both Portuguese people (whose childhoods they bring back) and tourists. These are the chocolates we had in Portugal before the likes of Cadbury’s, Kinder, Mars and Lindt chocolates became prevalent in store shelves.

Imperial makes several brands of chocolates: Pintarolas (similar to plain M&Ms), Fantasias, Allegro (chocolate coated caramel), Pantagruel (my choice of chocolate for making home-made chocolate mousse), Jubileu and Bom-Bokas (big chunks of creamy filling coated with chocolate).

Giveaway
One lucky winner will receive 5 Jubileu chocolate bars (valued at $18) in the following flavors: milk chocolate; milk chocolate with almonds, hazelnuts and raisins; milk chocolate with pears and almonds; extra dark chocolate with mint; and dark chocolate with lime and hot pepper (my mom’s favorite). Please note that these chocolates may contain nuts or traces of nuts.

Winner: Crystal Hogate. Thank you for that really elegant and tasty entry. And thank you to all the other participants!
