I’ve been raving about Quinta da Regaleira since I first visited it this year. The estate can be found in the charming town of Sintra, about 30 minutes from Lisbon. I’m obsessed with Sintra and will be writing about it again many more times here. This UNESCO World Heritage site is a must-visit regardless of what kind of tourist you are. If museums aren’t your thing, Quinta da Regaleira will let you tick the “Cultural Activity” box on your vacation check-list. Kids will love it for its fun, labyrinthine gardens, which they will want to explore thoroughly. If you add walking, breath-taking views, and architecture to the list, this place has something for everyone.
The most important tip I can give you is to make sure you get there early – arrive just as it’s about to open. If you’re doing a self-guided tour, it means you’ll get the gardens all to yourself, which is pretty magical. Why is it so magical? The pictures speak for themselves. The gardens are home to underground tunnels, stepping stones through ponds, beautiful trees and flowers, statues, wells, water fountains and towers.
The Palace is an architectural curiosity, encompassing a complex array of architectural styles that, together, achieve a sophisticated and regal result. There are so many interesting features to take in, from the tiles and mosaics, to detailed stonework, wooden carvings and lighting, that it’s easy to overlook things if you don’t take your time and soak it all in.
Even though I did a self-guided tour, I’ve heard that the guided tours are absolutely excellent and intend to take one next time I go.
