A Loja da Burel - window display

Staying Warm, Cozy & Stylish

I came across Loja da Burel a few months ago when the weather was warm. I’ve been patiently waiting for the temperatures to cool and for the autumnal weather to return before sharing with you this lovely shop with unique gift ideas that are perfect for fall and winter (and Christmas is less than 2 months away now!).

Burel is a typical artesanal Portuguese material that is derived entirely from wool. After undergoing a series of twisting, spinning and pounding processes, the wool becomes very dense, versatile and water resistant. The final product is known as burel and is almost felt-like to the touch. Traditionally, burel was used for capes and other outdoor wear for shepherds due to its sturdiness and warmth. But Loja da Burel has made taken this material and put it to other uses, such as home decor and fashion accessories. And they do it extremely well!

For the home, I absolutely love the burel-lined benches; the intricate, flowery cushions; and an adorable flat floor cushion shaped like a fox. You can find some colorful throws for your bed or couch that will keep you cozy and your home stylish. If you’re looking for clothing, you can find burel coats, capes, and even shoes! Burel accessories include handbags, backpacks, hats and jewelry. What most surprised me about this store is how versatile the material is and how skillfully it’s been utilized in so many ways.

Aside from burel, they also have other 100% Portuguese wool products, which provide a softer touch for items such as scarves (say no to itchy necks!) and blankets. I especially love how they incorporate traditional prints into modern styles, the same way they incorporate a traditional fabric into modern styles.

Don’t worry if you’re not able to visit their shop in Lisbon (R. Serpa Pinto 15b), they have one in Porto too! For those further afield, check out their online shop and have a look yourself at their many beautifully-designed products.

Amongst such incredible pieces, it’s hard to choose which is my favorite. Which one is yours?

Some friends were visiting in May, and I encouraged her to buy a souvenir that would last, and be both functional and fashionable (she’s a fashionista). I suggested Burel, and she ended up buying a Burel blanket.

I’m so glad! What a great souvenir to take home! I’m sure she thinks of you and her trip to Portugal every time she uses it 🙂
